StoryMaps vs Static PDF Reports

Most GIS deliverables are still delivered as static PDF reports with embedded map images. The analyst creates maps in ArcGIS Pro, exports them as images, pastes them into a Word document, and sends the PDF. The spatial data is frozen in time and stripped of interactivity.

StoryMaps offer an alternative: web-based, interactive spatial narratives that let the audience explore the data themselves. The question is when the interactive format justifies the additional investment.

When to Choose Each Option

Choose Esri StoryMap

Choose a StoryMap when your audience includes non-technical decision-makers, when the spatial data benefits from exploration, when the deliverable will be shared broadly, or when the data will be updated over time. StoryMaps are best for board presentations, funder reports, public engagement, and ongoing monitoring.

Choose Static PDF Report

Choose a static PDF when the deliverable is for regulatory submission with specific format requirements, when offline access is essential, when the audience expects a traditional report format, or when the project budget is limited and the spatial component is secondary to the text.
